The gathering brought together representatives from both large and small-scale mining companies to address pressing concerns surrounding mining activities in the region.

The minister used the platform to highlight the devastating effects of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, including recent deaths linked to unsafe practices. Discussions focused on educating miners about industry regulations, legal requirements, and the importance of health and safety measures.

Environmental sustainability and responsible mining practices were also key topics, as officials stressed the need to protect the region’s natural resources.

Stakeholders seized the opportunity to exchange insights, sharing both challenges and successful strategies to improve the sector.

The minister underscored that President Mahama has set an ambitious goal for the region’s water bodies to be free of pollution by June, signaling a renewed push to tackle environmental damage caused by mining. The meeting served as a forum to align efforts and ensure compliance with national standards.

In a stern warning, the minister made it clear that the Eastern Regional Anti-Galamsey Task Force is prepared to crack down on violators.

Do not call me if you are arrested,” she told attendees, emphasizing that those who flout the law will face consequences without exception.
