En Huang, widely known as Aisha Huang, has received a four-year, six-month prison sentence and a GH¢48,000 fine, coupled with an order for deportation after completing her jail term for her involvement in illegal mining activities popularly known as Galamsey

This verdict follows the decision of the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court, led by Justice Lydia Osei-Marfo. Aisha Huang faced charges related to unauthorized mining operations, facilitating others in such operations, and the illegal employment of foreign workers. Additionally, she pleaded guilty to the charge of entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.

The court, presided over by Justice Osei-Marfo, was convinced by the state’s case, presented by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atokora Obuobisa. The conviction was based on the court’s belief that the prosecution had successfully demonstrated Aisha’s involvement in the alleged crimes beyond a reasonable doubt.

Throughout the one-year, two-month trial, Aisha Huang maintained her innocence, often appearing in court with a nose mask and a white scarf. Despite her denial of all charges, the court found inconsistencies in her defense statements, contributing to the guilty verdict.

In a plea for mitigation, Aisha’s counsel, Miracle Attachey, highlighted her custody since October 2022 and requested the court to consider a fine and deportation instead of a custodial sentence.
