This new specialized agency aims to optimize the entire value chain of gold, from extraction to international marketing, moving beyond traditional revenue streams like royalties and taxes. The initiative is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader economic plan to stabilize the Ghanaian currency and boost foreign exchange earnings, addressing long-standing issues of unregulated gold trading and financial losses.
Under this new framework, the Ghana Gold Board will play a crucial role in formalizing gold trading, tackling smuggling, and enhancing the international reputation of Ghanaian gold. With Ghana being Africa’s leading gold producer in 2019, producing 142.4 tonnes, the establishment of the Gold Board is timely and strategic.
