The government of Ghana has given its approval to raise the monthly allowances of National Service personnel, administered by the National Service Scheme (NSS), from GH¢559.04 to GH¢715.57, and this increase will take effect from January 2023
The Cooperate Affairs Department of the National Service Scheme made the official announcement on Sunday, July 23.
The approval for the allowance increment was a result of several discussions and engagements held between the National Service Scheme, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Ministry of Finance.
A formal letter dated July 18, 2023, signed by the Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei-Asare (MP), contained the government’s approval for the upward adjustment.
According to the statement released by the National Service Scheme, the Controller and Accountant-General have been instructed to implement the new allowance levels.

Management of the National Service Scheme has secured government approval for upward adjustment of monthly allowances for National Service Personnel from GH₵ 559.04 to GH₵715.57, with effect from January, 2023, the statement said.
The approval, which was contained in a letter dated July 18, 2023 and signed by the Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei-Asare (MP), was as a result of series of engagements between National Service Scheme, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Ministry of Finance, the press release further hinted.
As for the arrears resulting from the difference in the increased allowance, all currently active National Service Personnel will be entitled to receive them once the new rates take effect.
The management of the National Service Scheme also urged patience from the personnel while the necessary administrative processes are carried out to ensure prompt payment of all arrears related to the allowance increment.
It is worth noting that the last adjustment to the National Service personnel’s allowance was made in January 2017, when it was increased from GH¢350.00 to GH¢559.04.
Now, with the recent approval, the allowance is set to rise to GH¢715.57 starting from January 2023.
