The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) begins an indefinite strike today, May 25, 2023 to demand for review of their salaries by the government

JUSAG announced the strike in Accra on May 24, 2023. Mr. Samuel Afotey Otu, President of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana, mentioned that all staff of Judicial Service, with the exception of Security officers, will not report to work beginning Thursday, May 25, 2023 until their demands are met.

The JUSAG has maintained the stance that by convention the said review is done every two years hence pressing government to do same as per the country’s constitution demands premised on the advice of the Judicial Council.

The association reportedly wrote to the President of Ghana, Akufo-Addo to approve the recommendation of the Judicial Council for a review of salaries and related allowances for staff of the Judicial Service as enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana,  Article 149.

The association added that it complained about the withdrawal of the Cost of Living Allowance in December 2022, amidst the economic hardships in the country, concluding that its members had exercise ample restraint and must act now.

According to JUSAG, the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has failed to implement the recommendation by the Judicial Council on February 2023 for the salary review which could have averted their decision to embark on strike and thus will continue with their move starting Thursday, May 25.

Background of the The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG)

The Ghana Judicial Service plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice in the country. The service serves as the backbone of Ghana’s legal system, responsible for administering justice, interpreting and applying the law, and resolving disputes.

Comprised of various courts and tribunals, the Judicial Service operates independently from the executive and legislative branches of government, ensuring the separation of powers and safeguarding judicial autonomy.

Judges and magistrates are appointed based on their qualifications and experience, and they are entrusted with the responsibility of adjudicating cases fairly and impartially.

The Judicial Service also strives to enhance access to justice for all citizens, promoting transparency, accountability, and efficiency within the judicial system.
