rev. dr. lawrence tetteh raises alarm over rising hiv:aids rates on legon campus

Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, Founder and President of the World Miracle Outreach, has expressed concern over the increasing rates of HIV/AIDS infections in Ghana, particularly among university of Ghana (Legon) students.

During a panel discussion on GTV on Thursday, October 24, 2024, he highlighted the troubling rise in cases among young people and the potential long-term implications for the country’s youth.

Dr. Tetteh pointed out that a major factor driving this increase is high levels of promiscuity among students, which he fears is putting them at significant risk. He specifically noted that the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, has reported alarming infection rates, underscoring the urgent need for preventative measures and education to address this issue on university campuses.

The Ghana AIDS Commission on the other hand has expressed concern over the disturbing statistics of HIV/AIDS cases, as its 2023 National HIV Report revealed that an estimated 50 people are infected every day in Ghana.

Remarks by Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh about HIV Infections on University of Ghana Campus

The number of boys and girls in Legon who are HIV positive, you would have the biggest shock of your life.
This is sad, this is sad and I’m happy I’m saying this on national TV.

Some of these young boys and young girls already on campus are living promiscuous lives and they have already contracted HIV/AIDS. These are people I have prayed for… and I’m not talking about 10 years, 5 years, it is sad.

And if some of them tell you how they get into it, what is happening is that some of these girls go to the place and when they come back they also connect to the boys and girls there. So, a lot of people think that they are getting a boy, they are getting a girl then it (HIV) spreads.

The pastor’s remarks serve as a call to action for policymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals to enhance HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention efforts. He emphasized the need for a concerted national response to combat the spread of the virus, especially within educational institutions where students are most at risk.
