In a Founders’ Day address, on Saturday, August 3, President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has rejected vehemently the notion that only Dr Kwame Nkrumah founded Ghana.
In his address, the president despite disagreeing to that ‘notion’ added that Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable. His address has sparked controversy about the president’s decision about renaming public institutions after his relative, JB Danquah.
Many Ghanaians have also opined that the dropping of the two-cedi note that had only Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s face was a planned move by the president to discredit the country’s founding father Dr Kwame Nkrumah. Others have also explained what they believe is the main reason why Dr Kwame Nkrumah is hated by the Danquahs.
While a prisoner, our Kwame Nkrumah (Nzema boy) won Accra Central MP seat at the 1951 elections forcing the colonial govt to release him to form the new government. Meanwhile the free-man JB Danquah lost his hometown, Abuakwa seat. This is why they hate Nkrumah oo. 🤣 pic.twitter.com/2Rv9bysC2K

In 2019, Parliament passed a law establishing August 4 as Founders’ Day to honour the contributions of all who played a role in Ghana’s journey to independence. The law also designated September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day to specifically acknowledge Nkrumah’s contributions.

I speak to you this evening, rejecting completely, the notion that Ghana was founded by one man.
