Aspiring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong has slammed the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s C.I. to make the Ghana Card the sole document for registration as a voter.
The Member of Parliament for Assin North who has also publicly expressed his interest in running for Presidency disapproves of the use of Ghana card as a prerequisite for voter registration adding that the EC’s move will disenfranchise many Ghanaian voters.
The Electoral Commission earlier announced a constitutional instrument that will enforce the use of Ghana card during voter registration for the 2024 general elections.
This was met with stern opposition from Ghanaians and the opposition NDC describing the EC’s move as unconstitutional.
Parliament consequently invited the EC Chair to answer some questions regarding the constitutional instrument (C.I) but that seemed not to have yielded the outcome Ghanaians hope for leading to the outspoken MP, Kennedy Agyapong’s criticisms.
In an interview on Kumasi-based Sompa FM, Kennedy Agyapong described the decision by the EC as bogus as he questioned the competence of officers at the helm of affairs.
For Americans, even Ghanaians who have naturalized, they are so proud to hold an American passport. Ghana has people taking bogus decisions and I wonder about those who sit there and take such decisions.
That a whole Ghana passport, you claim that to register to vote, we won’t allow the use of the Ghana passport, we have lost our identity to National Identification, what?”
I am against it. Ghana has people taking bogus decisions. We have a whole Ghana passport, but you (EC) claim that to register to vote you can’t use it to register as a voter. What makes me know that I am a Ghanaian? It is my passport”, he added.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana Boss Jean Mensa in her defense last month on the floor of parliament said,
“The use of only Ghana Card will ensure and guarantee the credibility of the register and elections,prevent enrolment of minors, prevent foreigners from voting, eliminate the guarantor system which is prone to abuse.”
The Ghana Card will not be used for voting in 2024, it will be used to register, she added.
Her reasons have been heavily slammed my the opposition and political analysts with the latest coming from the New Patriotic Party’s presidential hopeful.
