Profile of Prof. Naana-Opoku Agyemang, Running Mate for John Mahama
During her tenure as Minister of Education from February 2013 to January 2017, Opoku-Agyemang focused on empowering women’s education and promoting inclusive education policies in Ghana. She played a key role in implementing the Inclusive Education Policy 2015, which aimed to improve access to education for all students, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.
Opoku-Agyemang made history as the first female running mate for one of Ghana’s two major political parties when she was selected for the 2020 election. Her selection was widely praised by women’s groups and activists as a step toward promoting gender equality and balance in Ghanaian politics.
Her campaign emphasized the importance of change and sustainable development, focusing on practical, youth-centered policies. She refrained from attacking opponents during her campaign, instead focusing on issues that resonate with the people of Ghana. Her efforts in coastal communities and her home region, the Central Region, paid off as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured significant victories in areas they had previously lost in the 2016 elections.
