A collection of Asante royal artefacts looted by the British and returned to Ghana and is now available for public viewing at the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi.
These precious items, taken by the British over 150 years ago, include significant ceremonial and historical treasures such as a gold-adorned ceremonial cap known as Denkyemkye, a state sword called Mpomponsuo, three gold soul-washers’ badges, and a gold peace pipe among others. These artefacts were initially removed from the Asante kingdom during conflicts like the Sagrenti War of 1874.

The display also showcases additional artefacts, including seven sheet-gold ornaments, a silver straining spoon, a pair of silver anklets, and one section of sheet-gold ornament. These items were among those taken during the wars and have now been restored to their place of origin. The Asantehene remarked ‘the return of these artefacts signifies the return of the Asante Spirit.

One notable piece in the collection is a gold lute-harp given to British diplomat Thomas Edward Bowdich by Asantehene Osei Bonsu in 1817 during a trade treaty. This remarkable instrument and the other artefacts have been returned to the Asante kingdom, offering a chance for the public to connect with the rich history of the region.
Looted artefacts (Sword handle)
The return of these artefacts was made possible through the cooperation of the British Museum (BM) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), which repatriated a total of 15 and 17 pieces, respectively. Visitors to the Manhyia Museum can now appreciate the cultural and historical significance of these pieces.
