A tragic incident unfolded in Russia’s Belgorod region as a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military transport plane crashed on Wednesday, as reported by the Russian state-run RIA news agency, the cause of which have been blamed on Ukraine by Russia.
The ill-fated aircraft was carrying 65 captured Ukrainian army servicemen bound for exchange, along with six crew members and three escorts.
Regrettably, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod region confirmed the devastating news that all individuals onboard the military transport plane had lost their lives in the crash. The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a prisoner exchange mission.
In a grim turn of events, Russia has accused Ukraine of shooting down the plane. The assertion comes as a shock amid the ongoing tensions between the two nations. Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, responsible for overseeing prisoner exchanges, confirmed that his office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
This tragic incident further heightens the complexities of the already strained relations between Russia and Ukraine, leaving many questions unanswered.
