ec boss jean mensa has confirmed, ghana card won’t be used for voting in 2024 elections

Good news for some Ghanaians as EC boss Jean Mensa confirms Ghana Card won’t be used to vote in 2024 elections in a speech on the floor of parliament.

The EC boss disclosed this on Tuesday February 28 2023, on the floor of parliament following invitation from parliament to brief the House on the controversial new Constitutional Instrument proposal.

According to the EC boss, the Ghana Card will primarily aid in voter’s registration process in the acquisition of new Voters’ IDs after the new constitutional instrument is passed.

This revelation has brought immense relief to Ghanaians following burdensome processes and inconveniences associated with the acquisition of Ghana card in country.

Ghanaians have faced many challenges just to acquire the Ghana card for several beneficial purposes including voting and mobile telecommunication services.

These challenges which have inconvenienced many Ghanaians are the main impediments hindering most Ghanaians to get their own Ghana cards.

In her speech, the EC boss categorically mentioned that the Ghana card will be the prerequisite to register as a voter and eventually vote.

Mr. Speaker, I wish to emphasize that the Ghana card will not be used to vote in the 2024 elections, the Ghana Card is only a requirement to register as a voter, she said in Parliament.

Once you present your Ghana card and successfully register as a voter, you will be issued with a voter’s identification card which bears the code of your region, your district, your electoral area and the name of your polling station, the Ghana card does not have these features and therefore it will not be used to vote in the 2024 general elections, she elaborated.

Ghana’s neighbour Nigeria this weekend went to the polls to elect a new president and the world’s attention has been pulled to the most populous West African country. Political analysts believe this must prepare Ghana to put effective and efficient measures ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections to ensure that Ghana’s peace is safeguarded.
