In Ghana, malaria has claimed many lives, both young and old and battling its spread has been very challenging over the years.

Most Ghanaian communities especially in Accra the capital city is engulfed with dirt and filth which breed mosquitoes in large numbers.

Cleaning of communities have been advocated by many politicians and health officials but achieving it has not been very easy.

Most people have resorted to sleeping under mosquito nets to help curb the problem and others manage to keep their immediate surroundings clean.

Causes of Malaria

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite. Mosquitoes spread the parasite to people when they bite them.

The mosquitoes that spread malaria are found in Africa, Central and South America, parts of the Caribbean, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the South Pacific (See maps: Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere). Travelers going to these countries may get bit by mosquitoes and get infected.

Symptoms of Malaria

Malaria symptoms usually appear within in 7 to 30 days but can take up to one year to develop. Symptoms may include high fevers and shaking chills, flu-like illness. Without treatment, malaria can cause severe illness and death.

Ways to Prevent Malaria Especially for Travelers.

  1. Clean your ambience.
  2. Take prescription malaria medication.
  3. Sleep under mosquito net.
  4. Use EPA-registered insect repellent.
  5. Wear long-sleeved shirts with permethrin
