Investigative documentary series by Aljazeera, has unveiled a damming report about Ghana’s president, Akufo-Addo whose name was mentioned by a high-profile money launderer Alistair Mathias
The documentary has revealed evidence of gold smuggling and money laundering syndicates in some African countries including Zimbabwe and Ghana notably endowed with gold and other precious minerals
The suspected money launderer Alistair Mathias who posed as ‘Financial Architect’ was engaged by undercover journalists who disguised as Chinese gangsters luring Mathias to disclose shocking details about his syndicate.
The money launderer had implicated the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his responses to some questions asked by the undercover journalists.
Mathias mentioned that Ghana’s President is his good friend and lawyer as he engaged in similar schemes in Ghana.
Ghana’s President is a good friend of mine, in fact, he was my lawyer, he claimed.
He explained details of his dealings and that engender gargantuan monetary earnings which according to him most politicians earn a substantial share.
For example, Ghana government, I get the contract. I subcontract it to you, $100 million contract. Ghana government pays me $100 million. I give it to you, and you say it’s $80 million.
In this scenario, the outstanding $20 million out of the inflated $100 million is shared per an arrangement reached between Alistair and the said politician,
I’ll have an arrangement with them, and they get 15… I’ll probably get 5 million. I keep all of it in Dubai. Whenever they want it, they just tell me and I send it. He elaborated.
Mathias said his operations in Africa was fruitful as premised on trust dubious politicians have in him and that facilitated him to orchestrate his syndicate freely and effectively .
In Ghana, I take tenders, road construction, procurement, supplying different things, oil, this that. There, all the politicians get taken care of, indirectly because it allows me to do all my other stuff freely.
President Akufo-Addo however has debunked the claims about his friendship with Mathias or as a lawyer for Mathias or his company.
President Akufo-Addo of Ghana told us [Al Jazeera] that he had no recollection of acting as a lawyer for Alistair Mathias or his company.
Mathias also hasn’t confirmed or mentioned any tender that has been awarded him by the government of Ghana or government contracts.
