Precautionary Measures Urged Ahead of Burkina Faso’s Bagre Dam Spillage on August 19

burkina faso's bagre dam spillage and white volta flooding

Burkina Faso’s Bagre Dam Spillage is scheduled to commence on Monday, August 19, 2024, according to an official announcement from SONABEL, the country’s power utility company cautioning residents of a possible White Volta flooding.

This action is being taken in response to the dam’s water level, which has reached 232.8 meters and continues to rise. The decision to release water is a precautionary measure to prevent the dam from overflowing due to the escalating water levels.

In light of this development, the White Volta Basin Secretariat of Ghana’s Water Resources Commission has issued a statement, warning that the water released from the dam could lead to significant flooding along the White Volta River. The river, which flows from Burkina Faso into Ghana, is expected to overflow its banks, potentially inundating its natural flood plains. Residents in the affected regions are strongly advised to take necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and property.

This is to inform you of your further action relating to flood management. We will furnish you with additional information on this matter as this becomes available to us, the statement cautioned.

The spillage of the Bagre Dam is a routine procedure that SONABEL undertakes to manage excess water levels and minimize the risk of uncontrolled flooding. However, the potential impact on downstream communities in Ghana cannot be underestimated. Local authorities and residents are urged to remain vigilant and stay informed about the situation as it develops, ensuring that they are prepared for any emergency that may arise.
