Media Governance Rift: National Media Commission (NMC) Chair and Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) Clash over Media Attacker Blacklisting

National Media Commission (NMC) Chair and Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) Clash over Media Attacker Blacklisting
  • The National Media Commission (NMC) finds itself at odds with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) regarding the recent proposal to blacklist politicians implicated in attacks against journalists.

Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, Chairman of the NMC, has criticized the GJA’s initiative, labeling it as “dysfunctional and unproductive.”

The GJA’s stance revolves around advocating for media houses to boycott two politicians allegedly involved in assaults on journalists.

Specifically, the GJA has called for the exclusion of MP for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, and MP for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, both accused of perpetrating attacks during the NPP’s parliamentary primaries.

Despite condemning assaults on journalists, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo emphasized the importance of pursuing legal recourse for victims rather than resorting to a blanket blacklisting of politicians.

This recent development unfolds against the backdrop of law enforcement’s failure to apprehend individuals responsible for physically assaulting David Kobina, a journalist affiliated with Cape FM in the Central Region.

The assault occurred during the NPP’s parliamentary aspirant vetting process, highlighting the pressing need for effective mechanisms to address and deter attacks on members of the media.
