The Ghanaian midfielder has officially joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab on a one-year contract after leaving Spanish club Villarreal. Al-Shabab announced the signing on Friday, August 21.
Partey, 33, became a free agent after Villarreal opted not to renew his contract following the 2025/26 season, during which he made 32 appearances for the Spanish club.
The move marks another major chapter in the career of one of Ghana’s most prominent midfielders. Before joining Villarreal, Partey spent five seasons at Arsenal after establishing himself at Atlético Madrid.

Why the Al-Shabab move matters
The transfer keeps Partey playing at a competitive level ahead of Ghana’s continuing football activities following the 2026 World Cup.
Al-Shabab’s announcement described Partey as a “legend” and confirmed the deal as a one-year agreement.
The Saudi Pro League has increasingly attracted high-profile international players, making Partey’s arrival another significant addition to the competition.
Partey’s Villarreal chapter ends
Partey joined Villarreal after leaving Arsenal and featured regularly during the 2025/26 campaign.
Reuters reports that he made 32 appearances for Villarreal last season before the club decided against extending his contract.
His move to Saudi Arabia therefore gives the Ghanaian midfielder an immediate new club rather than leaving him without a team as the new season progresses.
Ghana fans will be watching closely
Partey remains an important name in Ghanaian football, particularly because of his experience at the highest levels of European football and his role with the Black Stars.
His new club will now become a major talking point among Ghana supporters as attention turns towards his form and fitness.
