Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike, set to take effect on October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to meet their demands regarding illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey in Ghana.
The decision follows an emergency meeting held on the same day, where labour leaders expressed frustration over the government’s continued inaction on the matter.
Prior to this, Organised Labour had issued an ultimatum, calling on the government to take decisive steps to combat galamsey by the end of September. They argue that the destructive mining activities are causing severe environmental harm and threatening the livelihoods of countless Ghanaians, particularly those in mining-affected regions.
The strike is expected to disrupt services nationwide, as labour unions protest the government’s inability to address the galamsey crisis, which remains a major concern for environmentalists, communities, and the nation at large. Organised Labour’s move signals growing unrest over the handling of the issue, demanding urgent government action.
