Western Regional Minister Vows Legal Action Against Anto-Aboso Quarry Operators After Tragic Explosion

western regional minister vows legal action against anto aboso quarry operators after tragic explosion

The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, has emphasized that quarry operators working at the Anto-Aboso quarry site will be held accountable under the law

Following his inspection of the site, he disclosed that STA Addsams, the operators who succeeded the previous Omni Quarry team, had not completed their licensing procedures and, consequently, were not authorized to continue their operations.

Despite this being in contrast to the Environmental Protection Agency’s stance, the Regional Minister assured that the operators would be legally addressed in response to the recent explosive incident at the quarry site, which led to fatalities and injuries. This incident occurred on a Saturday night at the Anto-Aboso site in the Shama District of the Western Region, operated by a Chinese company.

The Shama District Officer of NADMO, Emmanual Nyan, stated that efforts are underway to locate the missing persons, and an excavator may be used to investigate if anyone is trapped.

Four persons have been found dead. They are at the mortuary at the moment. Three blacks and one white lady. The other four Chinese cannot be found. We are trying to get an excavator to find out if many have been trapped, he remarked.

To date, four deceased individuals have been recovered from the explosion site, consisting of three Ghanaians and one foreigner. Meanwhile, five injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals, with nine already discharged. Regrettably, four individuals remain unaccounted for.
