E-Levy, Ghana Gets GHC 328.80 million

e levy, ghana gets ghc 328.80 million

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) reports E-Levy rakes in GHC 328.80 million as of September.

Since the inception of the controversial E-levy, Ghana has now realized what many will regard as substantial amounts of money from the tax system amounting to about three hundred twenty-eight million Cedis.

This tax system was met with rejection from all sections of the populace, mobile money operators, political analysts, businessmen and rank-and-file in the society who apparently were seen to be disadvantaged with this tax system.

The opposition party NDC assured Ghanaians to cancel and repeal this tax law when it retains power. According to the National Democratic Congress, this tax system is only to burden Ghanaians the more in a harsh economic conditions and government irresponsible spending has led to this unfortunate path.

E-levy has been performing very poorly since its inception and hopes of government to use it as the tool to salvage the economic revenue woes seemed dwindling. Finance Minister consistently championed the education of why E-levy was necessary for the country and the need for public support for it.

On this premise, the Finance Minister, Mr. Ken-Ofori Atta refused to heed to calls to go to the IMF, because according to him, the E-levy as domestic revenue generation tool will augment Ghana’s revenue generation and boost the economy hence no need for IMF.

In an interesting turn of events, the president announced the intention to go to the IMF for bailout despite the Finance Minister’s advocacy.
Perhaps we should ask, has the E-levy come to stay and will Ghanaians succumb to its payment if not already so?
