The government of Ghana has officially declared Monday, January 8, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate Constitutional Day
This was announced in a press release dated January 2, 2024 prior to the holiday.
This decision comes from the Ministry of the Interior, with the Minister, Ambrose Dery, underscoring the significance of the annual celebration.
In alignment with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has issued an Executive Instrument (EI).
This instrument has been implemented to reschedule the statutory holiday, originally slated for January 7, to Monday, January 8. The adjustment addresses the practicality of observing the occasion on a weekday, considering that the initial date falls on a Sunday.
The statement emphasized- “For the general public’s awareness, Constitution Day on Sunday, January 7, 2024, remains a statutory public holiday. However, the presidential directive emphasizes the importance of extending the celebration to the following day, Monday, January 8, 2024. This additional public holiday is to be observed nationwide, fostering a broader participation in acknowledging the constitutional heritage of the Republic of Ghana”.
