The Majority in Parliament executed a strategic walkout during the approval proceedings for the 2024 economic policy and budget statement

The catalyst for this walkout was the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who had called for a headcount, proposing that legislators’ names be audibly listed for a physical count.

This move by Mr. Bagbin triggered frustration within the Majority faction of the house, prompting them to stage a walkout as a visible demonstration of their dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s directive. The contentious nature of the approval process became evident as the parliamentary session unfolded.

Following the walkout, members of the Majority held a press conference where they criticized the Speaker’s directive, characterizing it as a deliberate delay tactic.

They alleged that the intention was to provide an opportunity for absent Minority MPs to swiftly enter the chamber and participate in the counting process.

Simultaneously, the Minority, undeterred by the Majority’s actions, expressed their commitment to opposing the passage of the 2024 budget.

They asserted that the proposed budget posed a threat to the country’s economic growth and development, outlining their reservations and vowing to take a stand against its approval.

In response to the escalating tensions, Speaker Alban Bagbin made the decision to suspend the parliamentary sitting.

The suspension adds an air of uncertainty to the proceedings, leaving the fate of the 2024 budget hanging in the balance as political dynamics and dissent continue to shape the legislative landscape.
