Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has emphasized the economic potential of the National Cathedral, suggesting that it should be regarded as a catalyst for economic development

Ofori-Atta believes that upon completion, the National Cathedral could generate millions of dollars in revenue, positioning it as a significant economic venture that goes beyond its religious and cultural significance.

This perspective encourages a strategic reconsideration of the current debates surrounding the cathedral, as they could play a crucial role in advancing the government’s objectives to boost tourism in Ghana.

Speaking at the Ghana Tourism Investment Summit 2023, Mr. Ofori-Atta underscored the transformative impact the National Cathedral could have on Ghana’s tourism sector.

This whole issue about the National Cathedral, in my mind, is the third leg of this triangle because how do you build a society in which you are clear in defining who you are politically?

How do you build a society in which the economic engine is growing, and how do you contain that within the spiritual realm that ensures stability in the ages to come?

And so, even as we look at something like the National Cathedral that has economic benefits beyond what we see, both in Israel and the Hajj, they realize about $6 billion to $8 billion a year and in Africa, we have some 600 million people who are Christians and so imagine Ghana as the new Jerusalem. It will be a different reality. He explained.

He urged stakeholders to recognize the potential of the cathedral in fostering robust infrastructure, thereby contributing to overall economic growth.

By reframing the narrative around the National Cathedral, Ofori-Atta envisions leveraging its economic benefits to drive the government’s broader initiatives.

The Finance Minister’s remarks reflect a broader strategy to view the National Cathedral not only through a cultural and religious lens but also as a key player in Ghana’s economic landscape.

This perspective aligns with the government’s efforts to strategically position the cathedral to stimulate tourism growth, potentially making it a major revenue-generating asset for the country.
